Hotbabe Chess presents a laid back variation of the ancient strategic board game.

While most chess apps emphasize the importance of competition, Hotbabe Chess offers a wonderful alternative for people who simply want to play the game for fun. It can serve as a viable learner's tool for those at the beginner and intermediate levels.

The premise of Hotbabe Chess is simple and entertaining: Your virtual opponent is a gorgeous woman who flirtatiously distracts you from the game at hand. The lovely brunette is featured via a webcam replica in the bottom-left corner. Her teasing escalates depending on your performance, but the program also lets you request helpful hints from her.

Hotbabe might be your virtual opponent's name, but don't be fooled by her looks or labels, because she can be a fierce foe at higher levels of play. There are 20 levels of difficulty, but it's always the same lady in the box regardless of what mode you choose. She literally does everything in the app, so there's apparently no need for any substitutes, but a little more variety might be nice.

A sizable portion of the screen is dedicated to a retro chat box that recalls primitive instant messaging programs. This is where the dialogue takes place entirely. Although Hotbabe's mouth is clearly moving, there is no accompanying audio; as such, she only talks to the player via typing. Similarly, the interface can be finicky about the precise phrases that will elicit a functioning response.

Because video files are included, the download is over 60MB, which is a little hefty for a chess game. However, the humorously sensual experience is definitely worth the disk space. The game has plenty of intuitively beneficial quirks, and its ability to automatically save games is a definite plus. The interactive menus make it an absolute pleasure to load or save game files.

The actual chess computer is truly up to snuff. While it might not be on par with a Grandmaster, the move-predicting algorithm will probably suit the purposes of most layman players. All moves are visibly recorded on the board's right, which makes it easy to spot mistakes, inaccuracies and blunders. Scrolling through the records is a cinch.

Because Hotbabe Chess was developed in 2005, it possesses an old-school charm that is impossible to replicate. It's an ideal platform for anyone who wants to hone their skills while indulging in some playfully frisky banter. This is chess with a sexy twist!
